4 Kayak Rental Tips

by Isabella Stanley

Kayaking is a fun way to spend an afternoon or weekend. You can spend time in nature and get some mild exercise, so it's a relaxing and enjoyable way to spend time with your family or just enjoy some solitude. If you can't go kayaking very often, you may not want to buy and store your own kayak and equipment. In that case, you can rent one or more kayaks for your adventure. Here are some kayak rental tips to know.

1. Choose A Single Or Double Kayak

You can rent a kayak for a solo adventure or you can rent a kayak that seats two people if you want to share your trip with your child or another adult who isn't familiar with paddling or who may not have the strength to paddle. Either type of kayak is fun, so you can choose based on whether you need to let someone ride with you or not. You can also choose your kayak rental based on the style.

You might want one you can peddle like a recumbent bike or one that you can sit on top of in a more comfortable seat. You can also rent a kayak made for fishing if you'd like to stop and fish while you're on the water.

2. Take Lessons If It's Your First Time

If you've never been kayaking before or if others in your group haven't been, it's a good idea to start with a class if the rental company offers them. The class teaches things like how to paddle so you can control the kayak, and how to stay safe on the water. You might even feel more comfortable going on a guided tour your first time on the water so you'll have an experienced guide with you to help if needed and to supervise your trip.

3. Decide On Your Rental Period

You can rent a kayak by the hour, day, weekend, or longer depending on your plans. If you'll be staying on the lake near the rental company, you may want to keep your kayak for a few days so you can get on the water when you feel like it during your getaway. However, renting by the hour is a good way to start kayaking too. You may want to call ahead and reserve a kayak rental at your getaway destination to make sure you'll be able to get a kayak during the time period you need it.

4. Take A Flotation Device And Sun Protection

The kayak rental company will probably provide everything you need including paddles and a floatation vest for your safety. If a vest isn't provided by the company, be sure to take your own. Also, you may need sunblock, mosquito repellent, a hat, and water to drink. You don't want to load your kayak down with extra equipment, but taking simple emergency supplies might be a good idea unless you're traveling with a guide who brings along what you might need.
